Common Bird Problems in the Golden Horseshoe

In Southern Ontario, the most common "nuisance" birds are Pigeons, European Starlings, and House Sparrows. Because these species are non-native, they often seek out man-made structures for shelter rather than trees. Homeowners in Hamilton and Brantford typically experience the following:

  • Nesting in Vents: Starlings are notorious for packing bathroom, dryer, and stove exhaust vents with dry straw and grass. This creates a major fire hazard and prevents your appliances from venting properly.
  • Soffit and Roofline Entry: Smaller birds like sparrows can squeeze into gaps as small as an inch, nesting inside your attic or behind your fascia boards.
  • Ledge Roosting: Pigeons often congregate on window ledges, signage, and storefronts in urban areas like Downtown Hamilton or St. Catharines, leaving behind massive amounts of corrosive droppings.
  • Gutter Clogs: Nesting materials frequently wash into gutters, leading to water backups that can damage your foundation or cause roof leaks.
Bird Infestations

The Hidden Dangers of Bird Infestations

Ignoring a bird problem can lead to expensive repairs and health complications for your family or employees.

1. Corrosive Bird Guano (Droppings)

Bird droppings are highly acidic. Over time, "guano" will eat through roofing shingles, metal siding, and expensive paint finishes. For commercial properties in Niagara and Oakville, this can significantly decrease property value and curb appeal.

2. Health Risks: Parasites and Disease

Birds are hosts to several parasites, most notably Bird Mites. When birds nest in a vent, these microscopic mites can migrate into your living space, biting humans and pets. Furthermore, dried bird droppings can harbor Histoplasmosis, a fungal respiratory infection that is dangerous if inhaled during a DIY cleanup.

3. Fire Hazards

A bird nest in a dryer vent is a literal tinderbox. The combination of dry nesting material and the high heat from your dryer is a leading cause of residential fires in the Halton and Niagara regions.

Our Humane 4-Step Bird Removal Process

At City Wildlife Control, we adhere to the Migratory Birds Convention Act and local Ontario wildlife regulations. Our methods are designed to be effective without harming the animals.

1

Specialized Inspection

We identify the bird species and every active or potential entry point. Whether it’s a high-reach vent on a townhome in Burlington or a warehouse ledge in Hamilton, we use the right equipment to assess the situation safely.

2

Humane Extraction and One-Way Doors

For birds nesting inside vents or attics, we install specialized one-way bird doors. These allow the adult birds to exit to find food but prevent them from flying back in. If there are flightless chicks present, we carefully remove them by hand and place them in a protected "nesting box" nearby so the parents can continue to raise them outside your home.

3

Nest and Debris Clearance

Removing the bird is only half the job. We thoroughly clear out all nesting material—which can sometimes be several feet deep inside a vent pipe. We then use industrial-strength disinfectants to kill mites, bacteria, and pheromone scents that attract other birds.

4

Professional Bird-Proofing (Exclusion)

To ensure the birds never return, we install heavy-duty galvanized steel vent covers. Unlike the plastic covers found at big-box stores in Brantford or St. Catharines, our steel guards are chew-proof and bird-proof. For commercial ledges, we offer:

  • Bird Spikes: To prevent pigeons from landing.
  • Bird Netting: For balconies and large structural openings.
  • Bird Slopes: To make ledges impossible to roost on.

FAQs

Can I just spray the nest with a hose?

We strongly advise against this. Wetting a nest inside a vent can cause the material to expand and harden like concrete, making it nearly impossible to remove without replacing the entire vent pipe. It also doesn't solve the entry problem.

Do you remove birds from commercial signage?

Yes! We provide bird-proofing for retail plazas and offices in Oakville, Hamilton, and Niagara to keep entrances clean and professional.

Are the birds protected by law?

Most migratory birds are protected in Ontario. However, invasive species like Pigeons, House Sparrows, and European Starlings can be managed year-round. Our team knows the local laws and ensures your removal is 100% compliant.
